Celebration of Harold Zandvliet's career

Over 35 years of cutting edge research, 20 years of being a professor at the University of Twente and 15 years as the group lead of the Physics of Interfaces and Nanomaterials group, prof. dr. ir. H. J. W. Zandvliet, known to most simply as Harold, is one of the most successful scientists at the University of Twente. His long career with its many successes is something to be celebrated. In honour of his achievements, we are organising a symposium on the 3rd of October 2025. You can join this celebration by clicking the "Register" button above. Please note that the registrations close on the 15th of September.

The symposium

During the symposium, you will hear talks from his close collaborators about in-depth physics on a plethora of topics, but also hear many personal stories and anecdotes. The symposium will take place on the 3rd of October, starting at 13:15 in the afternoon. At 18:00, the symposium will conclude with a dinner, providing ample time for socialising.

The location

Founded in 1961, the Technische Hogeschool Twente, known now as the University of Twente, has been the home of Harold Zandvliet for the better part of thirty-five years. It is the perfect location to host a milestone of such grandeur. The symposium will be held at the U Parkhotel, which previously housed Harold and the TNW faculty before the eventual move to the Carré building.
Travel to the UT is possible both via car and public transport. Below we list a number of options for travel.

Travel by car

There is parking available right next to the U Parkhotel. If this parking lot is full, P1 and P2 are only a short walk away.

Travel by public transport

There are two options to reach the UT via public transport. The first is to take the train to the central station of Hengelo and take Bus 9 to either stop Kennispark/UT or Westerbegraafplaats/UT. From there, it is an approximate 15 minute walk to the U Parkhotel.
The second option is to take the train to Enschede Kennispark, followed by Bus 1 to the stop UT/De Zul. From here, it is a 4 minute walk to the U Parkhotel.
